Forced-labor unionist terms worker-choice a 'rollback'

Gov. Jay Nixon says proposed legislation that is designed to make Missouri a "right-to-work" state is a step backward.

A Senate committee earlier this week considered legislation that would bar workers from being forced to pay dues, fees or assessments to labor organizations.

Supporters say the measure could help boost economic development and would give employees more rights. The top-ranking Senate Republican has said the measure is one of his priorities for this legislative session.

Nixon says he does not think "backing up on worker protections" is needed to improve the state's economy.

The federal government’s budget deficit grew by $50 billion in January and is expected to finish the year as the highest in history.

The Treasury Department said Thursday the deficit was one of the highest ever for the month of January, second only to the $63 billion deficit recorded two years ago.
